Check your attic regularly for moisture. The weather can affect this and there may be more
moisture on certain days than others. If you do find an area that is damp, try using a wet vacuum
to get rid of the water or condensation in your attic. A wet vacuum is specially designed to pick
up moisture and to dry the area. Do not use a dry vacuum. A regular dry vacuum can cause
mold spores to increase in the air, which can foster mold growth in your attic.
Seal Off the Area
If you find mold in your home, the first thing you should do is seal off the area of your attic in
order to prevent it from spreading. Use plastic sheeting and tape to keep the mold in one place
and the rest of the environment mold free, as well.
Mold spores are dangerous and can affect one’s health. Allergenic mold is normally not
dangerous, but it can trigger allergic reactions in people. If you have allergies based on
environmental aspects or have asthma, you may be affected by this type of mold.
Mycotoxic mold contains toxins which can cause mild to severe health issues. This type of mold
can cause problems such as attacking your immune system or even possibly causing cancer. It is
not recommended that home-owners attempt to remove this type of mold by themselves.
Lastly, Pathogenic mold can cause infections. People who may have suppressed immune
systems should be wary of this kind of mold. Those taking chemotherapy or who have
HIV/AIDS can be greatly affected. Once again, home-owners should not try to remove this kind
of mold by themselves.
It is important to remember that when dealing with mold, you must seal off the area immediately
and call a professional who can determine what type of mold you have in your home.
Prevent It from Coming Back
Once the mold is removed from your attic, it is important that the area is cleaned thoroughly.
Dispose of all furniture and items that may have come in contact with the mold-infused area.
The area should then be scraped free of left over material that may contain mold spores. Try
scrubbing the area with a rough surface. Do not use bleach to clean the area as it is ineffective in
killing or keeping away mold growth.
You may not be able to completely rid you attic of the mold spores. However, you can greatly
reduce the risk of it coming back by cleansing the area as soon as possible after the mold is
removed.
