It’s also important to make sure you prevent the mold spores from spreading before you begin cleaning and removing the mold. Each area should be cleaned separately, one at a time. Make sure to seal off each room you’re working in, to prevent airborne mold spores to spread into other areas of the home or building while it is being cleaned. To do this, use plastic sheeting with duct tape over doorways, vents and other openings to the building. If possible, try to use an exhaust fan next to an open or partially open door or window. This will create negative air pressure, which will direct the air flow outside and therefore channel the mold spores that have been stirred up during cleaning outside. Also turn off the HVAC system before cleaning.

If the area you are cleaning is dry, then lightly mist with water before cleaning the mold. Clean the affected area with soap to remove as much of the mold as possible, and then apply a disinfectant to kill the mold spores. Once the area is clean it must be completely dried to prevent mold spores from growing again and creating another mold problem. Carefully remove and discard mold and mold-infested materials into heavy-duty plastic bags. Make sure to wear a dust mask and protective clothing while cleaning the mold spores from your home. Also try to air out the area you work in after you’ve cleaned, potentially with air purifiers and dehumidifiers.
