OUTDOORS:

Ensure that vents, air intakes, and chimneys are not blocked, as this can prevent the proper operation of your home systems (i.e. furnace, heat recovery ventilator), which are essential parts of keeping your indoor air clean and using energy efficiently. If you see any blockages such as leaves and nests, remove them. But be careful. Depending on the job (i.e. climbing on the roof and inspecting the chimney) you might want to hire a professional.

Make sure that trees and shrubs are not planted too close to your house, as their roots can provide easy access for water to enter into your basement. Keep landscaping shrubs at least 3 feet away from the foundation of your house. Also check for cracks in the outer walls of your home and around doors and windows. These can also allow moisture into your home and provide a perfect environment for mold to grow, and/or allow the entry of insects and rodents. Be sure to properly seal all cracks to prevent this from happening.
